CHAPTER 30

The Night before Christmas

The span between Thanksgiving and Christmas seems all too short when one’s as busy as Jada had been. She had been busy working on report cards and preparing files for parent teacher conferences.

Ever since Thanksgiving, Pete had Jada had been having dinner together every night. Sometimes he and Jada would eat alone, or sometimes they would eat with her parents. Anytime Jada and Pete spent time with her parents, or her whole family even, everything felt so right to her. But today, the Calloways and the McKnights were finally going to meet each other. Jada sat in the back seat of her parents’ Audi nervous about how this meeting would turn out.

Due to having their own Christmas day traditions, the parents had agreed to get together for a Christmas Eve lunch. They had all decided that it would be easier to meet at The Basil Patch.

“So we’re finally going to meet Pete’s parents,” Charles cheerfully said from the driver’s side of the vehicle.

Jada didn’t feel one bit as cheerful as her father sounded. “Pete’s dad is nice, but I can’t say the same about his mother.”

Dana glanced at Jada from the passenger side of the car. “Has she been rude to you?”

“She’s been very rude to me.” Jada’s tone was certain. “Most of the time she doesn’t talk to me or acknowledge me at all. When she does talk to me, she makes inappropriate racial comments. I’m sure she doesn’t want Pete to marry me.”

Charles looked at Jada through the rear view mirror with a furrowed brow. “This is something we’re going to have to discuss tonight. You and Pete are going to be married in two months. His mother needs to start respecting you.”

The restaurant parking lot was sparse when they pulled in. Charles parked the car. Jada and her parents entered the front of the restaurant and sat down in the waiting area. They had only been sitting down for about a minute when Jada saw Pete approaching the front doors. He pulled the door open, but it was only his dad who walked in behind him. Pete smiled and walked over to give Jada a hug while their parents began introducing themselves.

“Hello, I’m Paul, Pete’s dad.” Mr. McKnight said in a deep voice as he extended his hand to Jada’s parents.

“I’m Charles,” Jada’s dad replied shaking Mr. McKnight’s hand.

“I’m Dana,” Jada’s mom shook his hand and smiled.

“I’m sorry my wife couldn’t make it.” Mr. McKnight stuck his hands into his pant pockets. “Her ankle started bothering her again.”

“Oh. I’m sorry to hear that,” Dana sympathetically replied.

After being escorted to a large, round table, the waitress promptly came and took their orders. They began to engage in conversation as they waited for the food to arrive.

Mr. McKnight talked about his job as a professor at the University School of Pharmacy, and Charles and Dana opened up about their ophthalmology practice. As she watched the parents talk, Jada realized even more how much Pete was like his dad.
